Have you ever scrolled through photos of Iceland and thought, “There is no way a place...

Have you ever scrolled through photos of Iceland and thought, “There is no way a place can actually look like that”? Well, we just returned from a six-day family adventure to the Land of Fire and Ice, and we are here to tell you—it’s even more magical in person.

Iceland is a land of dramatic contrasts, where ancient Norse history meets volcanic landscapes that feel like another planet. Did you know it was one of the last large islands on Earth to be settled by humans? From the moment we picked up our rental van at the airport, we knew this wasn’t going to be just another vacation. It was a journey into the wild, a celebration of family, and a crash course in Icelandic culture (including some very difficult-to-pronounce words!).

Whether you’re planning a bucket-list trip or just dreaming of the Arctic, come along as we relive our favorite memories from our 6-day Icelandic adventure.

Starting with a Splash: The Blue Lagoon and Reykjavik Comfort

After a long flight, there is nothing quite like stepping into the milky blue, mineral-rich waters of the Blue Lagoon. Located right in the middle of a rugged lava field, this geothermal spa is iconic for a reason. As we soaked in the warm water, surrounded by steam and volcanic rock, the stress of travel simply melted away. It’s the ultimate way to kick off an Iceland trip.

Feeling rejuvenated, we drove into Reykjavik to check into our downtown hotel. For our first dinner, we headed to Old Iceland Restaurant. We had heard great things about traditional Icelandic lamb, and let us tell you—it did not disappoint. The meat was tender, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. It was the first of many meals that made us realize Icelandic cuisine is a hidden gem.

A Taste of Tradition: Food Tours and Northern Light Chasing

On our second day, we decided to eat our way through the capital with the Reykjavik Food Walk. If you want to understand a culture, you have to eat its food! We sampled incredible fresh seafood, with the highlight being a fresh cod dish cooked in spinach.

Then came the “bravery test”: fermented shark. This traditional delicacy is… well, let’s just say it’s an acquired taste! It has a very strong, pungent flavor that stayed with us for a while. We laughed through the experience, but we might stick to the cod next time.

That night, we set out on our first attempt to see the Northern Lights. Chasing the Aurora is a game of patience and luck. We spent hours in a van, shivering in the cold and sipping hot cocoa, but the lights stayed hidden. It’s part of the adventure! To cheer ourselves up, we stopped at the world-famous Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur for Icelandic hot dogs. With a unique “snap” in every bite and a delicious sweet mustard, these hot dogs lived up to the hype.

Exploring the Golden Circle: History and Exploding Water

Day three was dedicated to the famous Golden Circle. Our first stop was Þingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park. This place is mind-blowing because you can actually walk between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. It’s also home to the world’s oldest parliament. The sheer scale of the rock formations and the vast plains made us feel very small in the best way possible.

Next, we stood in awe at Gullfoss, a massive two-tier waterfall. The power of the water is deafening, and if you get close enough, you’ll feel the icy mist on your face. We finished the loop at the Geysir Geothermal Area, where we waited with bated breath for Strokkur to erupt. Every few minutes, a tower of boiling water blasts into the sky—it’s a thrilling sight that never gets old.

After a long day of exploring, we found the ultimate comfort food at Icelandic Street Food: lamb soup and seafood stew served in warm bread bowls. It was exactly what we needed to warm our souls.

The Wild South Coast: Waterfalls and Ice Caves

Day four was perhaps our most “epic” day. We headed to the South Coast to visit Seljalandsfoss. What makes this waterfall special is that you can actually walk behind the curtain of water. It was an exhilarating, wet, and freezing experience, but looking out through the veil of mist felt like being in a movie.

Pro Tip: Do not wear jeans! We learned the hard way that once denim gets wet in Iceland, it stays wet and cold. Opt for waterproof gear instead.

From there, we headed to Vic for a once-in-a-lifetime experience: the Katla Ice Cave Tour. Stepping inside a glacier is like entering a different dimension. The ice is a vibrant, electric blue, with layers of ash and bubbles frozen in time. Because the glaciers are always moving and melting, the cave we saw will never look exactly the same again.

After warming up with some “Black Crust Pizza” in Vic (yes, the dough is charcoal-infused!), we visited Reynisfjara, the famous Black Sand Beach. The contrast of the white Atlantic waves against the jet-black sand and the basalt columns is stunning, but we made sure to keep a safe distance from the water—those “sneaker waves” are no joke!

Magic in the Sky: Hallgrímskirkja and the Aurora Borealis

By day five, we wanted to dive a bit deeper into the history we’d been seeing. We spent the morning at the National Museum of Iceland, which is a fantastic way to learn about the Vikings and how people survived on this harsh, beautiful island for centuries.

Later, we climbed the tower of Hallgrímskirkja, the iconic church that towers over Reykjavik. The panoramic view from the top is the best in the city—you can see all the colorful rooftops stretching out toward the ocean and mountains.

But the real magic happened that night. On our second attempt to find the Northern Lights, the sky finally cooperated. Watching the green lights dance and ripple across the stars was a spiritual experience. We stood in silence, huddled together, watching nature’s greatest light show. It was a moment we will never forget.

Final Reflections at Sky Lagoon

To wrap up our journey, we spent our final day at the Sky Lagoon. This oceanfront geothermal spa is breathtaking. We did the “Seven-Step Ritual,” which took us from the warm lagoon to a cold plunge, a sauna with a massive window overlooking the North Atlantic, and a refreshing cold mist.

It was the perfect place to reflect on our trip. We were there to celebrate a 50th birthday, and being together as a family made every waterfall and every cold night worth it. We ended our trip exactly where we started our culinary journey—back at Old Iceland Restaurant for one last delicious meal.

Our Best Tips for Your Iceland Trip

Dress in Layers: The weather changes every five minutes. Bring wool base layers and waterproof outer shells.

Skip the Jeans: They take forever to dry and offer no insulation when wet.

Rent a Van/Car: Having your own wheels gives you the freedom to pull over whenever you see something beautiful (which is often!).

Book Ahead: Popular tours like the Katla Ice Cave and Northern Lights excursions fill up fast.

Embrace the Luck: Whether it’s the weather or the Aurora, some things are out of your control. Enjoy the “chase” as much as the destination!

Iceland reminded us how important it is to step away from the busyness of life and create memories with the people who matter most. If Iceland is on your bucket list, don’t wait. Go chase those waterfalls!

Have you ever opened a fairy tale book and wished you could just step right into...

Have you ever opened a fairy tale book and wished you could just step right into the illustrations? That is exactly how we felt the moment we arrived in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland. Tucked away in the heart of the Bernese Alps, this tiny village feels like a secret world where the grass is impossibly green, the cliffs reach for the clouds, and waterfalls spill over the edges like silver ribbons.

We’ve traveled to some beautiful places, but there is something about the “Valley of 72 Waterfalls” that humbles you. It’s a place where the air smells of glacial melt and alpine meadows, and the only soundtrack is the distant ring of cowbells and the roar of rushing water. On our most recent trip, we decided to ditch the car and explore this natural cathedral the best way we knew how: on two wheels.

If you’re planning a family trip to Switzerland, come along with us as we recount our day biking through one of the most picturesque places on Earth.

Why We Chose Ebikes for Our Family Adventure

When we first talked about exploring the valley, we weren’t sure if we should hike or bike. Lauterbrunnen Valley is relatively flat, which is a rarity in Switzerland, but it’s also quite long. Since we wanted to see as much as possible without the kids (and ourselves!) getting worn out by noon, we decided on electric bikes.

We found a rental station just a short walk from the Lauterbrunnen train station. Let us tell you—renting ebikes was the single best decision we made. Even though the path is mostly level, having that extra boost allowed us to focus entirely on the scenery rather than our leg muscles. It gave us the flexibility to speed up when we were on the open path and slow down to a crawl whenever a particularly stunning waterfall came into view.

Setting Off: The Magic of the Open Path

As we pushed off from the rental shop, the scale of the valley hit us all at once. Huge, vertical limestone cliffs rose up on either side of us, creating a natural corridor that felt both grand and cozy.

The paths here are beautifully paved and easy to navigate, making them perfect for families. As we pedaled, we were surrounded by wide-open meadows filled with wildflowers. One of our favorite parts of the ride was the sheer contrast of colors—the deep grey of the rugged mountains, the bright white of the waterfalls, and that iconic “Swiss green” of the grass that you have to see to believe.

Every now and then, we’d look up and see paragliders drifting through the sky. They looked like colorful birds soaring over the cliffs, and we spent a good portion of our ride pointing them out to each other, imagining what the view must look like from up there.

Feeling the Mist at Staubbach Falls

Our first major stop was the legendary Staubbach Falls. You really can’t miss it—it plunges nearly 300 meters (almost 1,000 feet!) from the hanging valley above. It’s one of the highest free-falling waterfalls in Europe, and as we rode toward it, the scale was dizzying.

As we got closer, the wind caught the water, turning it into a fine, shimmering mist. We actually rode right through some of that spray, and it was so refreshing on a sunny day!

A Family Tip: There is a trail that leads up behind the falls, but we decided to skip the climb. During the peak summer season, that trail can get very crowded with tourists. Honestly, we felt the view was actually better from the ground. Standing at the base and looking up gives you a much better sense of the waterfall’s power and height. Plus, skipping the hike meant we had more energy for the rest of our ride!

Into the Mountain: The Wonder of Trümmelbach Falls

Continuing further down the valley, we made our way toward Trümmelbach Falls. If Staubbach is all about grace and height, Trümmelbach is all about raw, hidden power.

These falls are unique because they are actually located inside the mountain. They carry the glacial meltwater from the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks—up to 20,000 liters of water per second! You can actually feel the vibration of the water rushing through the narrow rock walls in your bones.

Because it’s tucked away, it feels like a secret cavern. It’s a bit of a detour from the main bike path, but it is absolutely worth the stop. It reminded us just how much history and nature are tucked into every corner of this valley.

Cowbells and Quiet Villages

One of the most peaceful aspects of our journey was riding through the small, traditional Swiss villages that dot the valley floor. These aren’t tourist traps; they are living, breathing communities where the houses are adorned with overflowing flower boxes and the residents go about their day with a quiet mountain rhythm.

In these sections, the sounds of the modern world completely faded away. We didn’t hear many cars; instead, the air was filled with the rhythmic clink-clank of cowbells. We passed by several Swiss chalets that looked exactly like the ones you see on chocolate boxes.

We took a moment to stop at a small local spot for a quick coffee and some snacks. Sitting there, watching the clouds drift over the peaks while the kids watched the cows in the distance, was one of those “core memory” moments. It wasn’t just about the sightseeing; it was about the peace we felt being together in such a serene place.

Practical Tips for Your Lauterbrunnen Biking Trip

If you’re feeling inspired to take your own family on this ride, here are a few things we learned along the way:

Start Early: If you’re visiting during the summer (peak season), try to head out as early as possible. We started our ride in the morning, which allowed us to enjoy the quietest parts of the valley before the midday crowds arrived.

Stay Alert: While the bike paths are safe and well-paved, keep in mind that they are occasionally used by local farm vehicles or cars. We made sure to keep the kids to the right side of the path and stayed aware of our surroundings.

The Ebike Advantage: We can’t stress this enough—rent the ebike! It makes the experience accessible for everyone, regardless of fitness level, and ensures that the focus stays on the beauty of the valley rather than the effort of the ride.

Pack Layers: Even on a sunny day, the shadow of the cliffs and the mist from the waterfalls can make things chilly. A light windbreaker or sweater is a must.

Reflections on a Magical Day

As we eventually turned our bikes around and headed back toward Lauterbrunnen Village, we all felt a little bit changed. There is a specific kind of magic in this valley—a mix of grand scale and quiet intimacy that you don’t find many other places.

Biking through Lauterbrunnen wasn’t just a way to get from point A to point B; it was a way to truly immerse ourselves in the landscape. We didn’t just see the waterfalls; we felt their mist. We didn’t just look at the meadows; we heard the life moving through them.

If Switzerland is on your bucket list, put a bike ride through Lauterbrunnen at the very top of your itinerary. It is an adventure your family will be talking about for years to come—ours certainly is!
